Company Background
Established in 1954 in Sheffield originally as a steel manufacturer, Peter Wood & Co. Ltd has since diversified into several areas of steel and tool manufacture including stainless steel bar and strip, high temperature alloys and general engineering steels.
Within the tool division of the company included the manufacture of blanks for tools such as pliers, scissors and surgical instruments and it was with having the background in tool manufacturing that the opportunity to produce the Searcher Bar was presented to Peter Wood & Co. Ltd in 1974.
During the early years of manufacturing the Searcher Bar, Peter Wood & Co. Ltd worked closely with British Gas Plc to develop both the design and safety factors for the bar.
British Gas produced a specification for the production of Searcher Bars, namely British Gas Engineering Standard PS/E8, updated to Gas Industry Standard GIS/E8:2006, and the "SAFEWAY" Searcher Bars are still made to the exact standards of materials and testing today.
